BSc (Hons) Business Management student Marco Karim has completed the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Leipzig, taking on 113 kilometres across swimming, cycling and running – just four weeks after undergoing emergency surgery.
On 23 August 2026, Leipzig hosted its first-ever IRONMAN 70.3, bringing around 2,500 athletes to the city and surrounding region. Among them was Lancaster University Leipzig student Marco Karim, who took on the challenge across three disciplines: 1.9 kilometres of swimming in Cospudener Lake, around 90 kilometres of cycling through the Leipzig region and a 21.1-kilometre half marathon through the city.
For the Egyptian, the race was about more than completing a demanding sporting challenge. Having lived and studied in Leipzig since 2024, the city has become an important part of his life. This made competing in the first IRONMAN 70.3 Leipzig particularly meaningful – but the circumstances surrounding his preparation made the achievement even more remarkable.
Just four weeks before race day, Marco had undergone emergency surgery. Despite the setback, he remained determined to take part in the event and ultimately crossed the finish line.
Given the fact I called the wonderful city of Leipzig home for about 12% of my life, this race was rather significant to me despite it being only 4 weeks post emergency surgery. Thanks to Lancaster University Leipzig, who facilitated this.
Lancaster University Leipzig was proud to support Marco throughout his IRONMAN journey. As part of the partnership, the university logo featured on his race suit, while fellow students and members of the university community were among those cheering him on along the course.
The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Leipzig brought the international triathlon series directly into the city and its surrounding area. The race began at the Nordstrand of Cospudener Lake before taking athletes through Markkleeberg and the Leipzig district on the cycling course. The final running discipline brought participants back into the city, with the route passing the Sportforum, Elsterflutbecken and Palmengarten before finishing at the QUARTERBACK Immobilien ARENA.
More than 2,200 athletes ultimately completed the race, with a median finishing time of 5:23:57.
For Marco, however, the atmosphere surrounding the race was just as important as the sporting challenge itself. In his post, he thanked the volunteers, emergency personnel and the thousands of people who came out to support the athletes: “As always, very grateful to all the Volunteers, the 20,000+ supporters along the course, and all the emergency personnel. You were the race, you are Leipzig.”
His achievement is a fitting example of the determination and commitment that can extend far beyond the classroom – and of the strong connection many Lancaster University Leipzig students develop with the city they call home.
