Leipzig Recognised Among the World’s Best Travel Destinations

26 Oct 2026

Leipzig continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting cities. Following its inclusion in National Geographic’s list of the world’s best travel destinations, the Saxon metropolis is receiving international recognition for its unique combination of culture, music, history, creativity and urban lifestyle.

According to National Geographic, Leipzig stands alongside renowned destinations in Norway, Mexico and China, with the publication highlighting the city’s rich musical heritage, vibrant cultural scene and authentic character. From the famous Music Trail (Notenspur) and the legacy of composers such as Bach, Wagner, Mendelssohn and Mahler to contemporary festivals, galleries, museums, jazz clubs and canal-side life, Leipzig offers visitors an extraordinary blend of past and present.

Plus: 5th liveable city in Europe

This latest accolade builds on an already impressive achievement. In the European Commission’s 2023 Quality of Life survey, Leipzig was ranked among Europe’s most liveable cities, placing fifth overall and becoming Germany’s highest-ranked city. The survey, based on responses from more than 71,000 residents across 83 European cities, highlighted Leipzig’s high quality of life, family friendliness and attractive urban environment.

Our university in the city centre

For students at Lancaster University Leipzig, these distinctions are more than just headlines. Located in the heart of Leipzig‘s city centre, the university campus places students within walking distance of many of the city’s most celebrated attractions, cultural institutions and events. Whether it is international festivals, concerts, exhibitions, theatre performances, markets or nightlife, much of Leipzig’s cultural life takes place right on students’ doorstep.

The city’s compact layout and excellent walkability make it easy to explore historic landmarks such as St Thomas Church, the Gewandhaus and the city’s many museums, while modern cafés, creative spaces and waterfront locations along the Karl Heine Canal contribute to Leipzig’s dynamic atmosphere.

As one of Germany’s fastest-growing cities, Leipzig continues to attract students, professionals, artists and visitors from around the world. With global recognition from National Geographic and a top ranking for quality of life in Europe, it is easy to see why so many people choose to live, study and build their future here.

For Lancaster University Leipzig students, the experience extends far beyond the classroom. It means studying in a city that is not only academically and professionally connected, but also internationally recognised as one of the best places in Europe, and indeed the world, to live and explore.
