At yesterday’s Alumni Meeting on campus, we caught up with three recent alumni to learn about their current careers and future ambitions. Drawing on their own experiences, they also offered valuable advice for current students preparing for life after graduation:
Right now I am waiting for some internship and job responses while also studying German and some certificates related to Cyber Security.
My hint would be: When you’re done with your studies, you should not sit still. You will have some free time that you didn’t have before. Use that free time to learn some skills and enhance your CV. Try things that you’ve never done before, broaden your horizons. It will probably be very useful in the future. When you study, you have this image of the future and the location you’re going to be in. But sometimes faith doesn’t really have that plan. If things don’t work out, so and look other places as well. And who knows, maybe this other destination will be better than the one you planned for.
I’m just writing my dissertation, so finishing up my studies. Then, I plan to start a career within cybersecurity in the in the future. That’s why I am looking for jobs now and trying to find something.
I would recommend to start early with your dissertation: Do the study modules and start planning meanwhile. Don’t leave everything for the last minute. And I would also recommend to start applying for jobs while finishing the dissertation. I know the German job market can be a bit tough, so you need to start early and apply to as many jobs as possible to find something.
At the moment I’m learning German and taking an intensive course because I’m planning to stay here and I’m also working as a freelancer for Lancaster University as a workshop in structure and research assistant.
My hint for current students is to learn German early definitely and to attend workshops because you never know what you can learn in such events and it could boost your network.
