We are pleased to announce that an article authored by Vidhya Unnikrishnan – our Assistant Professor in Economics & Statistics – has been accepted for publication in the prestigious European Journal of Political Economy.
The article, titled “Municipal Electoral Competition and Economic Condition of Households: Evidence from Slums of Kolkata” examines how political competition and fragmentation shape economic mobility through occupational choices in slums in Kolkata, India. A primary data was collected for this in 2012 and 2021. Our empirical findings suggest that political clout, political competition and political alignment influence the choice of occupation in slum households. We also find that competition reduces inequality. A vital policy suggestion is to focus on development based on a planned economy rather than political incentives.
This achievement reflects the high standard of research conducted by academic staff at Lancaster University Leipzig and reinforces the institution’s commitment to contributing to global academic discourse on development economics and political economy.
