This is the third lecture of an entire series of lectures given by the researchers of Lancaster University Leipzig.
In this event, JProf Dr. Thomas Schmid, Assistant Professor in Computer Science, will present his latest research. His session is called “Why we need an ingredients declaration for AI – and what it will look like”.
Artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives. As AI takes over control over more and more tools and systems that surround us, understanding how AI systems work and make decisions has never been more important. This lecture introduces a proposal for a “Transparency Label” for AI systems, designed to empower consumers and citizens with the knowledge they need to navigate a world influenced by AI. Just as nutritional labels on food help us make informed choices, the Transparency Label will provide clear, accessible information about how AI systems operate, what data they use, and how they reach their conclusions. Based on the so-called AI=MC² taxonomy, this label will offer a straightforward summary of key aspects of an AI system, including its purpose, the type of data it processes, and any potential biases that could affect its outcomes. It will also highlight whether the system allows for human oversight or intervention. By fostering greater transparency, this label aims to promote trust in AI, helping users understand both the potential benefits and risks of AI-powered technologies. Ultimately, the Transparency Label seeks to democratize knowledge, ensuring that everyone—from policymakers to everyday users—can engage with AI in a more informed and responsible way. Together, we will explore the potential of such a label and learn more about its implications for the future of AI in society. Join the audience and discussion!
