This is the 5th lecture of an entire series of lectures given by the researchers of Lancaster University Leipzig.
In this event, Dr. Pascal Welke, Assistant Professor in Data Science, will present his latest research. His session is called “Graph Neural Networks for Machine Learning on Networks“.
What do “finding novel drug candidates that are active against some disease and not toxic’ and ‘identifying spambots that try to influence
elections’ in common? Both these problems can be solved by AI methods that are called Graph Neural Networks. A graph stores objects and their
connections. For example humans are connected to other humans by friendships, or Whatsapp chats in so-called social networks. In chemistry, atoms form chemical bonds to other atoms resulting in molecules that can be seen as graphs.
In this lecture, we will discuss Neural Networks that are built to deal with this kind of graph data, to make predictions for individual nodes in graphs (e.g. if a Whatsapp account is a spambot or a human) or for full graphs (e.g. if a chemical molecule is toxic, or not). We will look at the basics and have an outlook on some of the recent developments in the field.
