International Foundation - Computer Science
International Foundation Year is designed for students who either do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry (English level, school qualifications, etc.) or would like to gain additional subject or academic skills confidence prior to the start of their degree course.
International Foundation in Computer Science provides an introduction to the IT world and guarantees progression onto BSc (Hons) Computer Science or BSc (Hons) Software Engineering (subject to meeting the required criteria).
The programme can be completed in either 2 or 3 semesters depeding on your qualification and level of English.

Educational Aims
The educational aims of the programme are to:
- Develop students’ fundamental knowledge and understanding of the relevant disciplinary elements in computer science and related fields.
- Develop in students a broad range of transferable academic literacy, research and analytical skills to succeed in undergraduate study.
- Ensure that students have attained the prescribed level of English language competence to succeed on specified Lancaster University undergraduate programme.
- To prepare students to operate effectively and autonomously within the framework of higher education.
- Develop students’ graduate attributes to optimise future employability prospects in a global environment.

Teaching and assessment
Teaching is delivered via a combination of small group lectures, group-based tutorial coursework (oral and written presentation), and assessment is via individual coursework (oral and written presentation) and examinations. You will be encouraged throughout the stage of the study to undertake independent study to supplement what is being taught/learnt and to broaden your personal knowledge.

BSc (Hons) Computer Science
Computer science is a dynamic discipline with a diverse range of applications and career paths. This programme explores the theory and practice of innovative and experimental computer science, allowing you to develop well-rounded professional and technical skills.
The Computer Science programme is accredited by the British Computing Society (BCS) and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), and provides you with the knowledge and skills required to become a computing professional.

BSc (Hons) Software Engineering
Software Engineers are programming architects, who apply computer science, engineering and mathematical analysis to the design and development of large, complex, and critical software systems.
This programme provides you with a comprehensive grounding in computer science, while equipping you with the specialist skills required for a profession in software engineering and design.
Year One/Two will be in line with the modules studied within the BSc (Hons) Computer Science. However, in Year Three students will specialise in software design, development and engineering.
