In Germany, all students must have sufficient health insurance covering the following services:
- medical and dental treatment
- supply of pharmaceuticals, wound dressings, therapeutic and aid products
- hospital treatment
- medical services for rehabilitation
- services during pregnancy and birth
If you are an EEA national, or from a country that has concluded a Social Security Agreement with Germany, you are exempt from the health insurance requirement upon providing proof of health insurance in your own country. However, if you would like to have full access to the German healthcare (including routine check-ups, vaccinations and dental care) or have pre-existing medical conditions, you might want to consider signing up for a local health insurance.
International students in Germany are required to be covered by either public or private health insurance.
Public health providers we may recommend to newly enrolled students are, for example, BARMER and Techniker Krankenkasse (TK). After you have enrolled at Lancaster University Leipzig, we will assist you in applying for your public health insurance.
